Collagen – Not Your Average Protein

First, what is collagen and how can it help the body? Collagen is a protein within the body that is made from the amino acids glycine, proline, hydroxyproline, and arginine and is one of the most abundant types of protein in the body. This protein is found in our bones, tendons, ligaments, muscles, and skin. It has numerous benefits within the body from supporting skin health, bone density, and muscle repair. It essentially helps keep the body connected and pliable.

As we age, the normal wear and tear our body endures from everyday life wears down on our collagen supply and supplementing with collagen protein has been shown to not only help maintain the structure of our skin but also improve our recovery from exercise. It can also increase fat- free mass, increase strength, and help prevent age-related bone loss. Furthermore, this study showed that women between the ages of 18-50 years old, who performed 12-weeks of resistance training with collagen protein supplementation showed an increase in fat-free mass and hand-grip strength. Their counterparts, who resistance trained without supplementation as well as a significantly higher amount of fat loss and increased leg strength.

Moreover, this study showed that undenatured type II collagen (UC-II) of 40 mg improved knee joint extension in healthy subjects. UC-II also demonstrated the potential to lengthen the period of pain free strenuous exertion and alleviate the joint pain that occasionally arises.
